What is tripel beer?

Tripel is a beer style with strong roots in the Belgian brewing tradition. These generally golden-yellow beers combine a higher alcohol percentage with fruity and spicy aromas. Despite their strength, they can make a fresh impression, thanks to lively carbonation and a fairly dry finish.

The name tripel does not literally mean it contains three times the ingredients or alcohol. It is a style name, within which brewers find their own balance between malt, yeast, and hops.

What does a tripel taste like?

The yeast plays an important role and can provide aromas of ripe fruit, citrus, and spicy accents such as pepper or cloves. That spiciness can arise from the fermentation, although some brewers also add spices.

The malt forms the base, with light bread-like flavors and sometimes a hint of honey. Hops add bitterness and aroma. Together, these elements create a beer that can start fruity and round, yet finish dry.

Is tripel beer always sweet or heavy?

A tripel generally has a high alcohol percentage, but does not have to taste heavy or distinctly sweet. Many varieties actually have a dry finish. Carbonation and bitterness can balance out the full character.

There are also softer, rounder tripels in which fruity flavors are more prominent. Therefore, in addition to the style name, look at the flavor description and the alcohol percentage. This will give you a better idea of what to expect.

What is the difference between blond and tripel?

Blondand tripel can both be golden-yellow, fruity, and spicy. Tripel is generally higher in alcohol and more pronounced in character. Blond is usually a bit milder, although the styles can overlap.
