Discovering witbier, weizen, and pilsner
Witbier, weizen, and pilsner are familiar names to many beer lovers. Yet, these styles differ significantly from one another. While witbieris often fresh and spicy, weizenhas a soft character with recognizable yeast aromas. Pilsnerinstead places more emphasis on a clear balance between malt, hops, and a fresh finish.
Within every style, there is also plenty to compare. From traditional recipes to modern interpretations: this collection helps you look beyond your trusted favorite.
What is the difference between witbier and weizen?
Witbier and weizen are both brewed with wheat and are often cloudy. Nevertheless, they have their own background and flavor profile.
Witbieris strongly linked to the Belgian brewing tradition. Brewers often use coriander and citrus peel, which give the beer fresh and spicy accents. Together with the wheat and the yeast character, a light, lively taste is usually created.
Weizencomes from the German brewing tradition. The characteristic aromas of banana and clove arise primarily from the yeast used. Wheat contributes to the soft mouthfeel and the firm head of foam. Therefore, no banana or clove needs to be added to the beer to obtain those flavors.
What makes pilsner different?
Pilsneris a bottom-fermented beer that is usually clear and golden yellow. The taste revolves around the balance between light malt notes and hop bitterness, with a fresh, often dry finish.
Pilsner also features variation. Some pilsners are softer and maltier, while others are drier and distinctly more bitter. Hops can add floral, spicy, or subtly grassy aromas. Precisely in a beer with a relatively subtle flavor profile, these differences can be very noticeable.
