What is Triple IPA?
Triple IPA, often abbreviated as TIPA, is a powerful variant within the IPA family. These beers typically have a higher alcohol content than Double IPA, with a full body and an intense hop character. Triple does not mean that the ingredients or the alcohol percentage have been literally tripled.
The challenge for the brewer lies in the balance. Hops, malt, and alcohol must complement each other so that the beer offers room for various aromas and flavors in addition to its strength.
What does a Triple IPA taste like?
Hops can provide aromas of citrus, tropical fruit, stone fruit, or pine. The malt base provides body and can add some sweetness. The high alcohol percentage can give a warming accent, which is more noticeable in some beers than in others.
Many modern Triple IPAs have a soft, full, and juicy character. There are also variants that finish drier and have a firmer bitterness. The name TIPA therefore tells you something about the strength, but not exactly what the beer tastes like.
What is the difference between Double and Triple IPA?
Triple IPA generally goes a step further in alcohol percentage and intensity than Double IPA. This can result in a fuller flavor and a more pronounced warming character. The boundary between the two is not the same for every brewer.
Moreover, a Triple IPA is not automatically more bitter than a Double IPA. Hop usage, malt base, and fermentation together determine how you experience the beer. A soft, hazy TIPA can therefore come across as less bitter than a dry, West Coast-style DIPA.
Which Triple IPA suits you?
Do you enjoy soft and fruity IPAs? Then a Hazy or New England-style Triple IPA could be a great next discovery. Do you prefer a dry finish and clear bitterness? Then look for a variant that has been brewed more in that direction.
Take your time to taste and do not serve the beer too cold. As it warms up slightly in your glass, aromas and flavors can open up further. This is how you discover more of the interplay between hops, malt, and alcohol.
