What is Pale Ale?

Pale Ale is a beer style in which the interplay between malt and hops takes center stage. The name refers to the lighter malts used to brew these beers originally, compared to the darker beers that were common at the time. A Pale Ale therefore does not have to be light yellow: the color can range from golden yellow to amber.

The malt can provide flavors of bread, biscuit, or light caramel. Hops add aromas and bitterness, with notes such as floral, citrus, or tropical fruit. How the brewer combines those elements determines the beer's character.

What is the difference between Pale Ale and IPA?

Pale Ale is generally somewhat less strong and less pronounced in hop character than IPA. The malt is often given more room, allowing you to taste a different balance between malty flavors, hop aromas, and bitterness.

The boundary is not always sharp. A modern Pale Ale can have quite a lot of hop aroma, while some IPAscan actually come across as soft. Are you looking for a beer with a fruity hop character, but it doesn't need to be so powerful? Then Pale Ale is a great style to explore.

What types of Pale Ale are there?

Within Pale Ale, you will find different directions. English Pale Ale often has a more distinct malt character, with floral or earthy hop notes. With American Pale Ale, the emphasis is usually more on the hops, with notes such as citrus and a crisp bitterness.

Hazy Pale Ale is a modern, cloudy variant that often comes across as soft and juicy. Belgian and New Zealand interpretations also show how much variation is possible within this beer family. From familiar recipes to new combinations of malt, hops, and yeast.
